Letters to Milena: Book Review

Letters to Milena

Book Review

-By Sneha Pala

Kafka's letters to Milena is what yearning feels like. I haven't read a lot work by him and am fairly new to his writing but his letters to Milena Jesenská felt like reading someone's heart being poured into paper. It took me several months to read the book but every time I picked it up, I was sure to read a line that would alternate my views on love, attachment, affection, desire and devotion.

The book basically are the letters that Kafka wrote to Milena and it also comes with an introduction to help the readers understand the letters better. I would personally say that it sometimes got difficult to decode what the letters were revolving around and I also tend to forget names which was a trouble. The letters were only from Kafka's side so not knowing what the replies were to each letter did leave a few potholes.

I personally enjoyed the book a lot. Being someone who still believes in writing letters, I felt deeply connected to the book. For people who are new to the reading journey I would recommend to not jump into classics but to my dear readers, go ahead and devour this book. The letters take you through the journey of Kafka. How he was anxious and suffered from insomnia. I loved how he had laid himself bare in the letters sharing what he truly felt.

This review is on the shorter side since I don't want to bore you all in the details of the letters and how they progressed. I gave the book a four star rating solely because at times it was difficult for me to connect the dots but I would recommend this book to my reader friends out there.

As always thank you so much for sticking through!
