My Year of Rest and Relaxation: Book Review

My Year of Rest and Relaxation

Book Review

-By Sneha Pala

The title of the book is basically the summary about the book. I actually came across this book through some reel on instagram and the title intrigued me. With many positive reviews and the title of 'New York Time Bestseller' I assumed the book holds enough credibility to be read. There are a few books you complete in one sitting and then there are books like this one where it takes you long long time and dedication to read the book. It took me over a month to finish reading this book so to say the least, the book was boring.

The story talks about the narrator in her twenties who is young and pretty and has a huge inheritance after her parent's death, what could she be unhappy about. But yet she was in a deep pothole and ended up giving a year just to sleep. To help her journey, she got prescriptions for sleeping from her so called 'therapist'. The book talks about her past relationships and her tangled relationship with her 'best friend' Reva. That's about all I can say about the book.

The narrator is unlikeable which was a big put off to the story and the writing seemed repetitive to me personally because all she went on was about the prescriptions she got and how she could sleep more and more. The lack of human emotions was also another put off for me. The book obviously talks about depression and how it feels like to be in the mind of someone facing it. I would have preferred it more if the narrator was a little empathetic. Something I really liked about the book was that it was thought provoking and it sends you in a spiral of thoughts about a lot many things.

It's not like I didn't like the book at all. I mean some parts and some lines were written exceptionally well. As I mentioned the book really talks about depression. Is anyone ever really happy and has anyone ever really escaped pain. Very deep, very scary. Maybe it's very strange for me or what but I am not a fan of this book and surely I wouldn't recommend it to my readers as well.

I gave this book a 3 star rating on Goodreads only because of the thought some of the lines and dialogues that are written exceptionally well. Overall, if you are not a reader than this book is not meant for you but if you are willing to question yourself and discover some new strange genre the good ahead with it.

As always thank you so much for sticking through!
