If He Had Been With Me: Book Review
If He Had Been With Me
Book Review
-By Sneha Pala
As the title suggests, the book is sad and you are expected to be left hurt. Before I even started reading, I knew about it and it is said that the saddest books are some of the best ever written and I would agree with that statement for so many though I don't know why somehow I did not connect with this book as much as I normally do.
The book revolves around the story of an unusual girl named Autumn and Finn who were best friends since they were practically born but grew apart as they grew older even though they were neighbours. The book shifts between different time frames one being when the main characters were friends and the second their current situation. The book talks about friendship, first love, family issues and a lot more. So what not to love? Let me tell you.
The book itself opens with the what was going to happen in the end which I personally am really not a fan of but I guess many people enjoy it so I wouldn't want to blame the author for doing that. Autumn is truly an unlikable character and hardly relatable. Sadly I am not a fan of books with unlikable main characters. Secondly the plot is well non-existent at best. I wanted to read the book for the heart wrenching plot but well it did not affect me as much as I thought it should. The book is a quick read I would give it that and some parts are good but overall I did not understand the hype of the book. I know many readers loved this book which I honestly cannot relate to be but I can respect their opinion. I felt truly sad for Autumn and Finn and they definitely deserved better but the story overall lacked the spark.
Apart from all that, the book is terribly edited which so many errors but I cannot blame that completely on the author. I guess it was a good book considering if you are new to your reading journey but honestly for me the book didn't do much and I wasn't sobbing in the end like I would have expected. This book also has a sequel 'If Only I Had Told Her' which I did not read till now considering it has been over a year since I read this one.
I gave this book a three star rating originally and I guess that solely lies on how it is an easy and quick read but I honestly think it deserved two stars because I never thought about this book again after I finished reading it.
As always thank you so much for sticking through!
